Polyurethane Injection Molding Process

Injection molding is a repetitive process with extremely fast cycle time, which is carried out in a dedicated automated injection molding machine. The PU injection molding process involves the following steps:

  • Solid polyurethane pellets are fed directly into the injection barrel of the machine.
  • The reciprocating screw of the barrel pushes the polyurethane pellets toward the mold.
  • The high shear action of the screw frictionally heats the pellets, completely melting them at the end of the barrel.
  • When enough material has accumulated at the end of the barrel, the molten polyurethane enters the mold at one time at high pressure and speed.
  • The material enters the mold through a series of gate channels.
  • After the material solidifies, open the mold and use a series of pins, sleeves and demolders to eject the product.
